Starling Lab Receives Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Interactive Media
We are thrilled to announce that Starling Lab has been nominated for a News Emmy in the Outstanding Interactive Media category for our collaboration with Rolling Stone on “The DJ and the War Crimes”. We are honored to be nominated alongside other esteemed organizations like the New York Times and CNN.

“The DJ and the War Crimes,” led by Starling’s former executive editor Sophia Jones, is a year-long investigation into war crimes committed during the Balkan war. The piece centers on the Massacre in Bijeljina, Bosnia, where Belgrade-backed death squads known as Arkan’s Tigers carried out horrific violence. The story analyzes the history and misuse of photographs taken 30 years ago by photojournalist Ron Haviv.
To support this vital journalism, the Starling Lab team worked for months with Rolling Stone editors and the design firm Gladeye to create a comprehensive digital microsite. We developed a ground-breaking cryptographic image workflow specifically for this story. By bundling over a dozen advanced cryptographic tools and decentralized technologies, we built a first-of-its-kind investigative digital archive on the decentralized web. This approach allowed us to securely capture, store, and verify photos, documents, and social media evidence, providing journalists with powerful tools to address the challenges of modern disinformation.
This Emmy nomination highlights the profound impact that occurs at the intersection of cryptography, decentralized technologies, and digital journalism. We are incredibly proud of our team and partners, and we look forward to continuing our mission to authenticate digital media and restore trust in the information ecosystem.
